As we all know, Towers is ruled by the Lords of Towers, powerful mages who protect the city. The aristocracy of Towers is made up of anyone with magical talent, and members of powerful and rich families.
The day to day affairs of government are not run by the Mages, who are busy increasing their magical powers through research and study. Instead, each mage has a Steward who sees to things for the mage. The decision making powers of a steward depend on the degree of trust the mage has for the steward as well as the idiocyncracies of the mage.
There are four main divisions of the Government of Towers, The Chamber, The Chancery, the Exchequer and the Military. Below is a list of the top officials in each branch of the Towers government. The lists describe the official's title, his or her immediate superior and the number of such officials in the government. Officials who report directly to the Lords of Towers are on what is known as the Privy Council. It is called such because only those members may disturb the Lords in their Private Chambers.
The officials listed here are assumed to each have a staff, including a steward to do the actual work.
The Chamber is concerned with the Court and the Palace. The Chamber is run by the Lords' High Chamberlain.
The Chamberlain is arguably the most powerful man in Towers besides the Lords. All requests for audience with the Lords of Towers, except by members of the Privy Council, must be approved by him. The power of the various other Court officials depends on their ability to get the Chamberlain to approve an audience for their friends, cronies, hangers-on, and supplicants.
The Chancery is concerned with everything outside the court, i.e. foreign and domestic affairs. The Chancery is run by the Chancellor of the Realm. The Chamber and Chancery are roughly equal in power, but the Chamberlain still holds the trump card of access to the Lords.
The Keeper of the Privy Seal is nominally under the Chanceller, but in reality reports directly to the Lords of Towers, as he keeps the Privy Seal of Towers. He is also the head of the Towers Watch, Secret Service and Secret Police. His agents are competent, discreet, and feared by the enemies of Towers.
The Exchequer is concerned with the treasury, taxes and the mint. The Exchequer is run by the Chancellor of the Exchequer
The Military is concerned with the Navy, Army and the Militia. The Military is run by the Marshal of Towers.
In addition to the officials above, who have offices in the City of Towers or the Palace of Towers, there are a myriad of other important officials throughout the provinces of Towers. Below is a list of the most important of them.
In addition to the regular provinces, Towers also counts as a province, and has all the officials listed for each province. While a posting to the Towers Provincial office is prestigious due to the proximity to Court, it is also more frustrating. In the outlying provinces, the provincial officials are the highest ranking and are at the top of the social heap in the area. In Towers, they are nowhere near the top of the heap.
