There are eight official coins used in Towers. These coins are issued by the city of Towers. The city does not require that their coinage be used, but it is popular because of the high standards maintained by the mint.
Farthing - a bronze coin worth 1/4 penny.
Penny - a copper coin slightly larger than a US penny.
Shilling - a silver coin the size of a Penny. Worth 10 Pennies.
Tower - a 1 ounce silver coin slightly larger than a US Half Dollar. Worth 100 Pennies
Gold Tower - a gold coin about the size of a dime. Worth 100 Pennies.
Ducat - a 4/5 ounce gold coin, about 1 inch in diameter and 1/10 inches thick. Worth 1000 pennies.
Fortune - an 8 ounce cylindrical bar of gold, not quite an inch wide and almost two inches long. Worth 10,000 pennies.
Pyramid - a 6 pound gold pyramid about three inches square and two inches tall. Worth 100,000 pennies.
In addition to the currency issued by the Towers Mint, other forms of currency are used in Towers. As long as both parties agree, any form of currency or goods are legal to trade.
Most of the coins of Tower's neighbors are also used in Towers. Their popularity depends on the quality and reputation of the coinage. Some coinage, such as that of Tarse, is discounted heavily from the face value due to the extensive use of base metals to dilute the actual gold and silver content. Other coinage is just as desirable as that of Towers due to high standards of purity. Some merchants are petitioning Towers to allow anyone to mint coins and allow the free market to determine if anyone wants to use them.
Other forms of precious metal may be used instead of coinage. For example, the Westmen wear silver armbands specifically intended to be hacked into smaller pieces and used as payment.
