You Can’t Have Your Cake & Eat It Too…
Abortion: It’s one of the most controversial issues in today’s society… It’s not surprising since the core of the issue has to do with the death of a child, and no one wants children to die. I certainly don’t. I personally would never choose to have an abortion unless my life was in danger, or my child was afflicted with a catastrophic birth defect. By catastrophic birth defect I mean ones that would make anyone’s life afflicted with it a living hell. If I was unlucky enough to be in any of those sad situations, an abortion would be so emotionally hard I don’t even like to contemplate it. It took Pookey & I five loooong years to get pregnant with Morgan, because of infertility, so any child I would ever conceive is so very dear to me. Not that I’m saying that women who get pregnant easily, and have had abortions don’t grieve over the baby they had to abort. I know they probably do, who wouldn’t?
Even so, I’m pro choice, as I believe that a woman should never be forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term, ever. A woman has absolute sovereignty over her body, and to force a woman to carry a baby to term is to make her a slave to the pregnancy, and violates her freewill. Until science is advanced enough to make it possible for a baby to be grown outside of a woman’s uterus it will be at the mercy of whether the mother wants to carry it to term or not. It’s entirely her choice, and no one else’s. Coercing a woman to carry a baby to term does nothing but harm the mother, the unwanted child, and society.
Though, I am pro choice, I’d rather see that unwanted pregnancy not be conceived in the first place. After all, preventing an unwanted conception makes the need for an abortion unnecessary. It seems to me that a lot of anti-abortion people are also anti-birth control, but they need to realize that you CAN’T have your cake and eat it too. People who think they can are doing nothing but fooling themselves.
It’s apparent to me that the lack of high quality birth control available today is because of deliberate interference by religious authorities over the ages. If we can send man to the moon why can’t we have birth control that is 100% effective? I know it sounds a bit paranoid, but if you really think about it, you’ll begin to see that we SHOULD have access to better form of birth control, and start to question why we don’t.
It is thought by some that Pope John Paul I, who was only in office for 33 days, was really assassinated because some Cardinals felt he would revise the Church’s long standing ban on birth control. (This is just one of the many reasons given for his assassination.) This was because he came from a large, poor Italian family, and knew firsthand the harm such uncontrolled family planning has on the family unit. This theory is entirely possible, as religion’s ultimate aim seems to be to control its followers. By making them have more children than they could ever support, it creates a dependency on the Church that lasts for many generations. It’s sad that children have to pay the price for this power grab.
Basically what I am trying to say is: Everyone at risk of starting a human life should accept the responsibility that comes with that risk, and use effective forms of birth control. Abstinence only education, or other ineffective programs, are never going to curb unwanted pregnancies, simply because people ARE NEVER going to stop wanting to have sex. Period. (No pun intended…) If you truly want to stop abortions from happening, then support the efforts of organizations that put prevention first by offering low cost, or free, birth control so these unwanted pregnancies never happen in the first place. Put your money where your mouth is, or shut the hell up.
